September 20, 2005

Brussels, 19 Sep 2005

The Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published a call for tenders relating to the development of harmonised indicators and estimation procedures for forests with protective functions against natural hazards in mountain regions.

The main objective of the project is to explore the possible contribution of the NFIs and other forest monitoring systems to assess forest protective functions, by:
- identifying key components of the forest protective function by selecting useful indicators and surrogates;
- harmonising definitions and estimation procedures based on existing NFI and other forest monitoring data in these regions;
- proposing a strategy for monitoring and reporting some aspects of protective functions of mountain forests in the mountain regions; and
- identifying features and usefulness of remote sensing techniques and field assessments for harmonised monitoring of protective functions.
