Call for tenders for safety impact of daytime running lights for cars

July 31, 2002

Brussels, 30 July 2002

The European Commission's Energy and Transport DG has published a call for tenders for the assessment of the effectiveness of passenger car daytime running lights (DRLs) in terms of crash-reduction, as well as their effect on crashes into pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users.

The general aim of the project is to assess positive road safety effects of DRLs, and investigate possible negative effects. The project will specifically look into the concerns and perceived negative effects of DRLs by vulnerable road users, such as motorcyclists, pedal cyclists, pedestrians, the elderly, and people with reduced eyesight.

The project will also assess potential negative environmental impacts of the use of DRLs, such as increased fuel consumption and production of CO2. The project will also assess public acceptance of various categories of road users of the introduction and use of DRLs.
