Universities Scotland has suggested setting up a Scottish centre of excellence in renewable energy to underpin a potential £14 billion industry.
It has sent a report to the Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise highlighting academic expertise in solar power, wave power, alternative fuels, fuel cells and policy support. It says conservative estimates suggest Scotland could contribute 1 per cent of the world's renewable energy market.
