Call for expressions of interest in membership of non-food scientific committees

March 12, 2004

Brussels, 11 Mar 2004

The European Commission's Health and Consumer Protection DG has published a call for expressions of interest for membership of the Commission's new non-food scientific committees.

The committees address consumer safety, public health and the environment, and the Commission is looking for high level, independent scientific experts with up to date experience in a wide variety of scientific disciplines in these areas.

The new committees are:

- the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products - addressing questions related to the safety and allergic properties of cosmetic products and ingredients and other consumer products, with respect to their impact on consumer health;

- the Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks - addressing questions relating to examination of the toxicity and ecotoxicity of chemical, biochemical and biological compounds whose use may have harmful consequences for human health and the environment;

- the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks - addressing questions concerning emerging or newly identified risks, as well as broad issues requiring a comprehensive assessment of risks to consumer safety or public health, and related issues not covered by other Community risk assessment bodies.

The call is open to scientists from Europe and elsewhere. Applications from scientists in the EU's acceding countries are particularly welcome.

In addition to the selection of members for these three committees, a reserve list of scientists will be established to be used in the case of resignations, to identify associated members, or for additional expertise on an ad-hoc basis.
