Just when you were starting to think that the level of political debate could not fall much further without the protagonists starting to grunt, in steps alumnus to be proud of No: 85 with his profound and controversial thoughts on the ethnicity of beggars.

David MacLean, who will shortly himself increase the number of Scottish mendicants by begging for votes in order to retain his posts as junior home office minister and Conservative MP for Penrith and the Borders, graduated in law from the University of Aberdeen.
