Accountable body to oversee genetic data

November 10, 2000

* An independent body will be set up by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust to look after the proposed UK population genetic database.

The move follows the first round of public consultation, which raised concerns about how the information gathered by such projects is controlled.

The body will be responsible to the public, participants and other stakeholders and independent of the scientists.

* The House of Lords science and technology committee published the written evidence received in its new inquiry into human genetic databases on Wednesday.
