Innovative environmental design led by a professor from Thammasat Design School

An inventive approach to environmental design is shaping a vibrant, interconnected community spearheaded by Asst. Prof. Dr. Khiensak Seangklieng of Thammasat Design School. Dr. Seangklieng, a faculty member in the Department of Architecture at Thammasat University, has pioneered the principle of Low-cost Design Solutions (LCDs). This principle aims to cultivate spaces that foster sustainable self-reliance within communities, transcending traditional architectural boundaries to encompass various disciplines.

At the heart of the LCDs theory lies the ability to envision new perspectives and generate value with minimal initial investment. Originally focused on architectural challenges, this approach has evolved into a multidisciplinary endeavor crucial for advancing innovative solutions in diverse fields.

Dr. Seangklieng's pilot projects exemplify the application of LCDs principles, earning international recognition for their ingenuity.

Project Title: NORA PURA, A Sustainable Community with LCDs Design Approach

Rooted in the ethos of self-reliance and inspired by the rich cultural legacy of Nora, NORA PURA emerges as a beacon of innovation aimed at nurturing a resilient, vibrant society. This visionary project seeks to integrate the principles of Low-cost Design Solutions (LCDs) to revolutionize community development. The objective of this invention has been strongly created the radical philosophy of NORA (recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage-ICH by UNESCO) into the flagship project as a prototype of futuristic sustainable community.

Nora, a revered world cultural heritage deeply ingrained in Thai art, culture, and Buddhist traditions, serves as the guiding light for NORA PURA. Its essence permeates through various facets of life, from expressive dances to communal solidarity, shaping a tight-knit social fabric.

NORA PURA unfolds as a transformative endeavor led by the Manohra Kriangdech Group, situated in the Tha Khae Subdistrict of Phatthalung Province. Spanning across 4 rai of land, this initiative aims to metamorphose an idle expanse into a thriving ecosystem—a testament to sustainability and cultural preservation. Serving as both a hub for learning and a harmonious living environment, NORA PURA is poised to perpetuate and celebrate Nora's cultural heritage.

The architectural landscape of NORA PURA embodies modern innovation, meticulously crafted to optimize functionality and engagement. Delineated into distinct zones, the area caters to both livelihoods and scholarly pursuits. The Living NORA Gallery, for instance, serves as an immersive space, inviting visitors to delve into the intricacies of Nora's way of life through innovative exhibits. Moreover, the design of the outdoor theater epitomizes ingenuity, offering a theatrical experience akin to witnessing a grand opera performance.

In essence, NORA PURA transcends conventional paradigms, heralding a new era of community development fortified by sustainable practices and cultural reverence.

Project Title: LCDsongkhla - Redefining Sustainability in Public Spaces

Inspired by the imperative question of how to maximize the benefits of General Prem Tinsulanonda Historical Park for the people of Songkhla while fostering self-reliance, LCDsongkhla emerges as a pioneering endeavor. Under the stewardship of Asst. Prof. Dr. Khiensak, this project reimagines park design by blending past innovations with contemporary sensibilities, intricately woven into the social and cultural tapestry of Songkhla.

Central to LCDsongkhla's ethos is the embodiment of Songkhla's rich heritage, epitomized by the creation of 'Luang Pu Thuat', a revered figure steeped in local lore. Innovations in design, including the use of lightweight materials sprayed with polyurea, lend an ethereal quality to the statue, seemingly suspended above the water—a testament to advanced engineering and artistic finesse.

Furthermore, the park offers immersive experiences, such as birdwatching zones nestled amidst mangrove forests. These viewpoints boast eco-friendly designs, incorporating recycled, low-carbon materials to minimize environmental impact. Notably, iconic landmarks like the SPIDER+CraB sculpture exemplify the park's commitment to sustainable creativity, inviting visitors to interact and capture memorable moments.

Beyond mere aesthetics, LCDsongkhla features versatile public spaces, including theaters, exhibition areas, and outdoor concert stages. Each space is meticulously designed to prioritize innovation without compromising environmental integrity—a testament to the project's holistic approach to sustainability.

The culmination of these efforts is reflected in the accolades garnered by LCDsongkhla at prestigious international competitions, including the esteemed iCan 2023. With participants from over 95 countries, this recognition underscores the global significance of LCDsongkhla's innovative vision, poised to inspire and elevate park design standards worldwide.
