Infectious Diseases

With over a century of discovery and translational research in infectious diseases, the University of Liverpool is a recognised leader in this field.

Our work covers both global health problems plus national and local issues. The depth and breadth of our clinical expertise in infectious diseases, capability in translational science and facilities for undertaking preclinical work and clinical trials exemplify the Liverpool Advantage in this field of research.

Our interdisciplinary approach seamlessly brings together medical and veterinary science with a focus on emerging infectious diseases and zoonoses (diseases that spread from animals to humans).

The Liverpool Advantage - partnerships:

  • NIHR Health Protection Units - we host two of NIHR’s Health Protection Research Units: in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections, and in Gastrointestinal Infections.
  • From bench to bedside - our close partnerships with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Alder Hey Children's Hospital give us a distinct advantage in this field.
  • CEIDR - the Centre of Excellence in Infectious Diseases Research was created to develop innovative technologies for the prevention, control and treatment of infectious diseases.
