Sustainability: The University of Sharjah (UOS) is committed to integrating sustainability into every aspect of research reduced environmental impact and increased social and community benefits. Its researchers are pushing the frontiers of knowledge and discovery to shape a more sustainable future, locally, regionally, and globally. Through its interdisciplinary and partnership strategy, the UOS is advancing knowledge and creating solutions to local, national, and global sustainability challenges.
Thanks to the strict commitment of its researchers to the principles of sustainability, the University of Sharjah was able to obtain the Silver Rate in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating Systems (STARS)Tracking, among more than 900 participants from 40 countries. It became the first university in the Arab World to earn this rating in March 2022.
Sustainability is a domain of high importance to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and Founder of the University of Sharjah and His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah.
Top-Ranking Researchers: 69 UOS scientists and researchers are ranked among the top 2% of the world’s scientists in 2023, according to the American Stanford University in cooperation with the publishing house “Elsevier BV”. Those honored also included 5 scientists who obtained the first and second places according to the global classification of (Research.com), which ranks scientists according to research productivity and the number of citations globally in cooperation with the publishing house “Elsevier BV”. Also, Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sharjah for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges and Dean of College of Medicine, is ranked first at the level of UAE in the medical field according to the international website (Research.com).
Award-Winning Researchers in Engineering, Medicine, AI, and Renewable Energies: Many UOS researchers have won awards of distinguished researchers in the UAE and abroad. To mention but a few cases: Prof. Ramesh Bansal from the Department of Electrical Engineering received the Best Paper Award of the International Journal of Modelling and Simulation (United Kingdom) for the year 2022; Dr. Wafaa Ramadan, from the Research Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences, won the “Hussein Award for Cancer Research - Promising Researcher Grant”; Dr. Huseyin Ozan Tekin, from the Medical Diagnostic Imaging Department at the UOS, obtained “The Professor Engin Arık Scientist Award” (Turkey); and Prof. Ashraf El Najjar, Dr. Imad Afyouni and Imtinan Azhar from the College of Computing and Informatics received the Best Paper Award from the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Computational Linguistics (2021) for their research study entitled “AraCap: A Hybrid Deep Learning Architecture for Arabic Image Captioning”.
