The Jockey Club AI for the Future Project supports the launch of the first junior secondary AI curriculum in Hong Kong.
Teaching and learning packs developed by CUHK professors working on the Jockey Club AI for the Future Project have been adapted in a new AI module for junior secondary schools in Hong Kong.
Since the scheme was launched in 2019, professors and other scholars from the Engineering and the Education Faculties have created teaching and learning packs for secondary schools to use in pilot teaching and provided training to teachers. Funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the project aims to enrich junior secondary school students’ knowledge of AI, inspire creativity and instil AI ethics and promote the use of AI for social good. It has benefited over 10,000 students so far. The project has received recognition for its efforts, including the Smart People (Smart Education and Learning) Gold Award at the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2021 which aims at recognising and promoting outstanding information and communications technology (ICT) inventions and applications.
At the Computational Thinking and AI Education–Mainstreaming and Commendation Ceremony on 30 May, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government Dr. Choi Yuk-lin said in her speech that her Bureau, in collaboration with the Trust, had been consolidating and drawing on the experience accumulated by the schools from the project, distilling and developing it into the ‘module on artificial intelligence for junior secondary level’. The module will soon be issued for use by all publicly-funded schools in Hong Kong.

Through the Jockey Club AI for the Future Project, CUHK’s world-leading expertise in computer science and successful teaching experience will be leveraged to help Hong Kong secondary schools promote AI education and equip students with the skills to thrive in what will be one of the most crucial and competitive areas of the world economy. This project demonstrates how CUHK can make a future impact through education and research.
