BEACON AWARDS 1996/97 The following award winners were announced at the inaugural conference of the Association of Colleges: Bain Hogg Award for Lifetime Learning: community outreach department, Aberdeen College.

BBC Education Award for Multimedia to Enhance Learning: hairdressing and beauty therapy school, Halton College Basic Skills Agency Awards for Basic Literacy: ABE/community department, City of Liverpool Community College.

Runner-up award: faculty of community activities and service industry, Telford College of Art and Technology.

British Telecom Award for Distance Learning: creative studies faculty, Halton College.

BTec (Edexed) Award for Engineering: faculty of technology, Plymouth College of Further Education.

City & Guilds Award for Health and Community Care: management and training department, Weald College, Harrow.

Runner-up award: GNVQ (Advanced) Health and Social Care Unit, John Ruskin College.

NCET Award for IT to Support Learning: Wirral Metropolitan College.

Partnership Trust Award Mathematics Award: Dewsbury College Chemistry and Physics Award: Greenhead College Biology, Botany and Zoology Award: Greenhead College Combined or General Science Award: Stoke-on-Trent College Post Office Award for Learning Difficulties: School of community, special education and catering, Chesterfield College.

Runner-up award: Business studies department, Hereward College.

RSA Award for Business Studies: Solihull College United Biscuits Award for Applied Education: Construction Department, Plymouth College of Further Education.

Whitbread Award for Hospitality and Catering: Lewisham College.
