UMIST. Roland Smith, former professor of marketing and chairman of Manchester United plc was installed as chancellor on May 1 and awarded the following honorary degrees: DSC: Richard Greenbury, chairman of Marks and Spencer; Gary Weston, chairman of Associated British Foods.

UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND. DSc: St.John Hartnell, senior partner in Hartnell, Taylor and Cook and past president of the International Property Federation, founder and chairman of the Bristol Society.
