Smith, Pounds 65,230 from the European Regional Development Fund and the Department of Trade and Industry (interactive learning programme to enable non-technical personnel in local companies to explore computer networking); Drs O. Greene and J. Salt, Pounds 73,886 from the EU (international efforts to limit climate change) a joint project with German and Spanish partners.


Research contract/grant:

Professor R. Burns, Pounds 250,000 from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council/Department of Trade and Industry LINK programme (development of generic biotreatment methods for use by the water industry); Professor C. Knowles, Pounds 42,000 from the BBSRC/DTI LINK programme with an additional Pounds 72,000 from Viridian Bioprocessing and British Gas plc, (exploration of biodegradation of recalcitrant cyanide wastes and the potential to provide a safe and cost-effective method for remediating contaminated gas work sites).


Pounds 1.45 million from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (to purchase the archive of John Evelyn (1620-1706), diarist and friend of Pepys).
