Ewan McKendrick, fellow of St Anne's College, Oxford, and Linnells lecturer in law, has been appointed to the chair of English law from September.

UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

Gajendra Verman, dean of the research and graduate school in education, has been appointed to the Sarah Fielden chair of education.

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL ENGLAND

Robert Fowler, principal of the Central School of Speech and Drama, has been awarded the title of visiting professor.

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD

Fiona Williams, former senior lecturer at the Open University, is professor of applied social studies with effect from February 1.

The following have been awarded personal chairs: Jalna Hamer, reader, professor of women's studies; John Wood, lecturer, professor of medical biochemistry.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

James Mason, associate professor of biochemistry, obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Texas South-Western Medical Center, Dallas, has been appointed to the chair of clinical biochemistry.

Michael Cates, former lecturer in physics at Cambridge, has been appointed to the chair of natural philosophy.

UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING

Joseph Moran, director of the Scottish centre for Japanese studies, has been appointed to a chair in Japanese studies.

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

Alexander Broadie, previously titular professor in philosophy, has been appointed to the chair of logic and rhetoric.
