UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD. Robert Parker, fellow of Oriel College and lecturer in Greek and Latin languages and literature, has been appointed Wykeham professor of ancient history, succeeding W. G. G. Forrest.

University of Aberdeen. George Watson, founding member of the British Association of Irish Studies and reader, has been appointed to a personal chair in Irish literature in English, believed to be the first in the United Kingdom.

UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER. Henry Kitchener, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to Aberdeen Royal Hospitals and honorary senior lecturer in the University of Aberdeen, chair of gynaecological oncology; Ian Stratford, head of experimental oncology at the Medical Research Council radiobiology unit, chair of pharmacy; Michael Dixon, reader in dental genetics, promotional chair of dental genetics; Kevin O'Brien, senior lecturer in orthodontics, promotional chair of orthodontics. Professorial research fellowship: Martin Humphries, Wellcome principal research fellow in biochemistry.

Honorary professor of radiation oncology: William Duncan (September 1995 to August 31, 1998).
