UNIVERSITY OF KEELE

Gary Kelly, professor of English, University of Alberta, and Edward Larrissy, senior lecturer in English at Keele, have received professorships.

HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY

Philip Banfill, senior lecturer in the school of architecture and building engineering at the University of Liverpool, has been appointed to a professorship in the department of building engineering and surveying.

EDGE HILL COLLEGE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Derek Mottershead, former head of geography, has been awarded the title of professor.

ANGLIA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

The following have been appointed industrial visiting professors: Ken Mortimer, manager of education programmes, Ford of Europe: Roy Williams, manager of Powertrain and Vehicle Controls.

THAMES VALLEY UNIVERSITY

The title of professor has been conferred on: Angela McRobbie, programme leader of the MA in cultural studies; Robert Pratt, founding chairman of the AIDS Nursing Society at the Royal College of Nursing.

UNIVERSITY OF YORK

The following have been appointed to chairs and headships: Nicola LeFanu, formerly at King's College London, to the music department; Margaret Snowling, formerly at Newcastle upon Tyne, to the psychology department; Ian Russell, former professor of health services research at the University of Aberdeen, to the health sciences department. The following have been awarded personal chairs: David Smith, director of the Borthwich Institute of historical research; Alan Burnes, leader of the Real-time Systems Research Group; Peter Lambert, economics department; James Clark, chemistry department; Roger Woolhouse, philosophy department.
