Institution of Electrical Engineers

The Faraday Medal has been awarded to John Midwinter (below),professor and head of the department of electrical engineering at University College, London, for his substantial contribution to optical fibre communications and his work on the technology for transmission and switching of wide band optical signals.

British Telecom

Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education and the National Star Centre College were among the winners of British Telecom's University Development Awards Scheme, for their coll-aborative project designed to provide access to the multimedia HNC and HND courses for students who have physical and sensory disabilities.

Chartered Institute of Marketing The President's Award for outstanding service was presented to Peter Hallett, senior lecturer in marketing at Staffordshire University's business school. He also collected an award on behalf of the North Staffordshire branch of the institute, which had the most active membership in the UK, and was elected regional chairman for the West Midlands.
