UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL. David Owen was installed as chancellor of the university on July 25. He succeeds Alastair Pilkington. David Owen is co-chairman of the International Conference on the former Yugoslavia, former member of parliament for Plymouth Devonport and co-founder of the Social Democratic Party.

Frank Doran, a technician in the department of chemistry, has been installed as lord mayor of the City of Liverpool.

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY Richard Stone, professor and head of the department of law, has been appointed dean of the law school; Peter Jones will become associate dean and chief executive of the school; Phil Knot, has been appointed head of the department of graduate professional studies and deputy chief executive of the school; Peter Kunzlik will be head of the centre for legal research.

UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD Phil Coates, professor in the department of mechanical and manufacturing engineering, has been appointed associate director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in polymer science and technology, a collaboration between the universities of Bradford, Leeds and Durham, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
