David Owen was elected to the office of chancellor of the university with effect from January 1, 1996. The vice-chancellor said: "I believe that Lord Owen, like his eminent predecessors in office, will serve our university with great distinction and dedication."

Colin Bird, chair of pathology, has been elected dean of the faculty of medicine.
