KENT INSTITUTE OF ART AND DESIGN Vaughan Grylls, artist/photographer and former professor and head of the school of art and design at the University of Wolverhampton, has been appointed director, succeeding Peter Williams.

PONTIFICAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Raymond Hide, professor in the department of physics at the University of Oxford and fellow of Jesus College, has been elected to the academy.

ROEHAMPTON INSTITUTE, LONDON John Avery, head of the estate division and private finance unit at the Higher Education Funding Council for England is to be director of physical resources.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH Catrin Tilley, deputy director of Charity Projects and Comic Relief, member of the Institute of Management and the Institute of Charity Fundraising Managers, has been appointed director of development and alumni services.

BEN-GURION UNIVERSITY George Weidenfeld, publisher and founder of Weidenfeld and Nicolson, is to chair the board of governors.

COSHEP The Committee of Scottish Higher Education Principals has elected Richard Shaw, principal and vice chancellor of the University of Paisley, as the next convenor, succeeding John Arbuthnott.
