(Photograph) - A human foetus at around 20 weeks. Foetuses undergoing operations have shown signs of stress, but an anaesthetised adult patient would respond in exactly the same way and clearly feel no pain. As one expert put it: 'Unless it can be shown that the foetus has a conscious appreciation of pain then its responses must still, essentially, be reflex.'
