Applying for university in Uzbekistan
With many English-taught programmes, Uzbekistan is a great choice for students looking for a study destination off the beaten track

In recent years, Uzbekistan has emerged as an exciting, affordable and culturally rich destination for international students seeking quality education outside the traditional anglophone sphere.
With institutions such as Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT), Amity University Tashkent, and partnerships with European and Asian universities, Uzbekistan is making a mark on the global education map.
This resource serves as a practical guide for counsellors advising students on applying to universities in Uzbekistan, offering clear advice on applications, visas and funding.
Step 1: Understanding the higher education landscape
Uzbekistan has a mix of public universities and international branch campuses. English-medium programs are most common in fields including business, law, computer science and international relations.
Universities to consider:
- Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT)
- Amity University Tashkent
- Inha University in Tashkent
- Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent
These institutions offer globally recognised degrees with tuition fees ranging from USD$2,000 to USD$5,000 per year.
Step 2: Application process
Admission requirements typically include:
- High school transcripts
- English language proficiency (IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 or equivalent)
- Personal statement or motivation letter
- Some programmes require an entrance exam or online interview
WIUT application process (example):
- Online application via the university portal
- Submit required documents (passport, transcript, IELTS)
- Take the WIUT critical thinking and maths exam
- Attend an optional interview
Application deadlines vary but often fall between April and July for September intake.
Counsellor tip: Encourage students to apply early and request a pre-assessment of qualifications via email.
Step 3: Visa guidance
Uzbekistan offers a relatively straightforward student visa process. Once a student receives an offer letter and pays initial tuition fees, the university usually assists in issuing a visa support letter required for the student visa (Type D).
Visa steps
1. Receive the official invitation letter
2. Apply at the nearest Uzbekistan embassy/consulate or online
3. Submit required documents
4. Pay visa fee (USD~$50)
5. Wait seven to 15 business days
Important note: Students from some countries may enter on a tourist visa and convert it after arrival but it’s best to apply for the student visa beforehand.
Step 4: Funding opportunities
Although Uzbekistan is already an affordable option, scholarships and financial aid options are available:
- WIUT Scholarships (merit-based)
- Amity Tashkent Scholarships
- Government of Uzbekistan Scholarships
- Bilateral scholarships
Counsellor tip: Encourage strong academic profiles and motivation letters to increase chances for funding.
Additional considerations
Language and culture: English is the medium of instruction at international universities but Uzbek and Russian are widely spoken.
Health insurance: Most universities require students to take out local health insurance.
Post-study opportunities: Graduates may find regional job opportunities or continue their studies elsewhere.
