I hope your leader on the research assessment exercise was too pessimistic (Opinion, May 13). In the new system, we may find that 4* research is concentrated in few places. Whether funding is similarly concentrated depends on choices yet to be made.
If the funding formula gives a lot of weight to 4* research, funding will be concentrated. A formula with a more even set of weights will distribute funding more widely.
Concentrated research funding is a policy choice, not an inevitability.
