Quality in humanities gets ever less support

January 31, 2008

You report on the swingeing cuts in AHRC funding: success rate for research grants down from 22-29 per cent to 15 per cent, success rate for research leave grants down from 50 per cent a few years ago to 15 per cent, postgraduate awards down from 1,500 to 1,000. This is a crippling blow to arts and humanities departments, which are already struggling with severe underfunding compared with science departments. By placing this report on page 16, however, you confirm the marginalisation that has caused these disproportionately severe cuts.
