Mistaken identity

November 9, 2007

The detail from Michelangelo's School of Athens above the caption "Aristotle: posited the existence of a sixth sense" (Books, November 2) shows not Aristotle, but Plato pointing upwards to his realm of transcendental "Forms".

Aristotle's idea of an "inner touch" conforms to the thorough-going immanent naturalism represented by Michelangelo's depiction of him with a palm-down gesture.
