Forever English

October 6, 2011

I see that Ludwik Finkelstein of City University London has died (Obituary, 29 September). I have a Finkelstein story.

He was at a meeting in Wales, and introductions were being made.

"This is Mr Evans, Mr Williams, Mr Evans, Mr Davies and Mr Jones..."

"My name's Finkelstein," he said.

"Oh, you must be English."

Farewell, English Finkelstein; you did well.

Ian Smalley, Professor of geography, University of Leicester
