London Guildhall University writes off student debt only when it has exhausted all avenues for collection ("'No fee, no degree' threat", THES , July 5). Withholding certificates or graduation ceremony invitations is a "last-resort" sanction.
Debt management and cash-flow control is a growing challenge with widening participation. The majority of students who pay on time are subsidising those who evade payment.
