Categorical change

March 28, 2003

News that up to 400,000 Jews served in the armies of the Third Reich (Books, THES , March 21) throws a sidelight on the observation in Jeffrey Kaplan's Encyclopedia of White Power that "a surprising number of American National Socialists were Jewish", including Dan Burros, the party secretary in the 1950s and afterwards the founder of the American National Party. Anita Bunyan is not wrong when she says that we may need to rethink some of the categories we use when writing about the past.
