The teaching responsibilities of the colleague will consist of two parts: 1) to lead and develop School-level AI modules and 2) contribute partially to department-level teaching. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate must possess a PhD in computer science or a relevant field within the humanities and social sciences as per the respective descriptions below. Humanities We seek candidates who understand the intersection of AI and the humanities and are capable of integrating AI technologies into their research and teaching, primarily through natural language processing (NLP) to analyse historical texts, literature, and cultural data. Experience with AI tools such as machine learning for sentiment analysis, data mining for social trends, or computational linguistics for linguistic analysis will be highly regarded. Additionally, the ability to instruct students on how AI can be applied to the study of philosophy, ethics, and history is essential. Understanding AI’s implications for privacy, identity, and digital culture is also critical. Social Sciences We seek candidates who can incorporate AI into their research on human behaviour, social trends, and policy analysis and are knowledgeable about AI tools that can analyse large datasets, including predictive modelling, sentiment analysis, or social network analysis. Experience with AI applications in sociology, political science, communication, linguistics, or area studies is vital. The candidate should be equipped to examine AI’s impact on social structures, inequality, and ethics in their work and understand AI’s potential to shape societal norms and public policy. Familiarity with tools such as Python for data analysis and AI-driven surveys or data collection methods is advantageous. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. We are seeking a motivated Research Engineer to join our team in developing an AI Training Studio — an innovative platform for AI-vision-based quality inspection in manufacturing plants. The system will enable users to drag and drop foundational AI models to build customized AI pipelines for tasks such as image enhancement, detection, segmentation, and robotic control. You will contribute to both the backend development (pipeline orchestration, inference deployment) and the frontend interface (user-friendly drag-and-drop studio, similar to visual workflow tools). This role is ideal for an engineer eager to gain experience in building applied AI systems that bridge research and industrial deployment. Key Responsibilities Backend Development Design and implement pipeline orchestration for drag-and-drop AI model workflows. Integrate foundational models (classification, detection, segmentation, enhancement) into modular pipelines. Build APIs to manage model training, deployment, and inference. Automate the process of pushing trained models into an inference engine. Frontend Development Develop an intuitive drag-and-drop web interface for building AI pipelines (similar to the attached prototype). A Research Technician position is available in the Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton General Hospital. This is a newly constructed, dedicated research building that is the result of a significant fund-raising campaign. It builds on a 40 year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton, and represents the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in the UK. The activities in this centre span from pioneering discovery science to applied research and preclinical modelling and, crucially, onto first-in-human clinical trials and beyond. The centre houses world-class research facilities, including state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and a clinical trials unit. The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Ward and Ober. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the development of novel antibody-based therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and autoimmunity. This research has led to several therapeutics that are currently in advanced clinical trials or approved for clinical use. The group also develops advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their research is supported by major grants from the Welcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies. The appointee will be highly motivated and excited by the challenges involved in supporting a dynamic, interdisciplinary group of researchers. The appointee’s role will be to provide support with the day-to-day running of the laboratory by providing technical support for the experimental work of post-doctoral fellows, research scientists and graduate students, combined with the ordering and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and supplies. The position holder will be expected to be familiar with biosafety and other regulatory processes and follow these procedures as necessary. It is essential to have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training. The role requires the ability to plan and organise your workload, work well under pressure and communicate effectively and professionally with other laboratory members. A scientific knowledge in a biological field equivalent to B.Sc. level is extremely desirable. The post-holder will possess relevant academic qualifications and work experience as well as good IT skills. The position is for one year.
