Washington College is a secular liberal arts institution in Chestertown, Maryland. Founded in 1782, it is the 10th oldest college in the country, the first chartered higher education institution in the entire United States post-independence.
Chestertown is in eastern Maryland, the Atlantic side of Chester River, which passes nearby before joining the stretch of water that separates the university from Baltimore, Maryland’s most populous city. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is an 80-mile north-westerly drive from the college through Delaware.
Washington offers more than 40 study programmes, primarily for undergraduates. English, psychology, social sciences and marketing rank among the most popular. The vast majority of Washington students reside on campus.
George Washington donated money to the college, served on the Board of Visitors and Governors and agreed that it could use his name, which has been part of its title throughout its history. But the college’s main founder was Rev. William Smith, who was its first president, and rode across the region on horseback to raise money to secure the institution’s future.
James M. Cain, the crime fiction author widely thought of as a founder of Roman noir, and Benjamin H. Vandervoort, a Second World War lieutenant colonel who played a role in the D-Day landings, fighting with a broken leg, as portrayed by John Wayne in film The Longest Day, both studied at the university.

About the Job The University of East London (UEL) in partnership with STRABAG UK is embarking on a collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with the overall aim of development and commercialising a pioneering, sustainable grout made from repurposed organic and earth-based materials. The project leverages advanced materials engineering expertise to deliver an innovative, eco-friendly, low-carbon tunnelling solution that is first-of-its-kind. This will contribute to addressing the urgent need to address the climate emergency and help achieve carbon emissions reduction targets. We are seeking a Civil Engineering and Materials (KTP Associate) to join the team. As a KTP Associate you will deliver an innovative project as an employee of the University of East London, but will spend most of your working time at the company’s premises and sites. Technical Tracing the complex binding, self-forming, self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms (e.g., hydration, silicatisation, sequestration) reactions in Realtime, their interdependencies, and complex response to the environmental factors and controllers. Adaptation of the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) current technology to suit the new grout. We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant in Bacterial Evolution to join the UKRI FLF-funded research group of Dr Rachel Wheatley, based in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's University Belfast. Species interactions are a fundamental comonent of bacterial infections. Yet, when, and how these interactions impact the response of a bacterial pathogen to antibiotics is currently not clear. The appointee for this position will: (1) conduct research into how microbial interactions impact antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens, and (2) assist in the general running of the research laboratory, with tasks such as lab ordering, autoclaving, and supporting team members with experiments. The successful candidate will be involved in conducting experiments to investigate how antibiotic resistance mutations impact bacterial virulence in a Galleria mellonella model, and experiments to investigate how antibiotic resistance evolves in microbial communities. They will support running of the research laboratory via tasks such as consumable ordering, lab meeting schedules, and supporting team members with experiments. About the person: The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria: Hold a Degree in a relevant area (e.g. biological sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry). The Role and Department The Senior Research Contracts Manager will provide expert leadership in the negotiation, drafting and management of research agreements, ensuring that the University's interests are protected while enabling high quality research activity to proceed efficiently. Acting as a senior point of escalation for complex or high risk contractual matters, the post holder will offer authoritative advice on contractual terms, governance requirements and compliance obligations across a diverse range of funders and partners.
