About the University of Technology, Iraq

Basic information and contact details for the University of Technology, Iraq

institution
The University of Technology, Iraq is one of Iraq’s largest universities and is located on the Eastern side of the city of Baghdad. It was established in 1960 as an Institute of Industrial Teachers, outlined by the Ministry of Education in cooperation with UNESCO, with a department of materials engineering, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering and manufacturing engineering and assembly. It was renamed as the Higher College of Industrial Engineering in 1967, then the College of Engineering Technology, before being annexed to the University of Baghdad and finally in 1975, established as the University of Technology in 1975. It specialises in engineering, computer sciences and applied sciences and technologies. It has an on-site kindergarten and nursery for students’ children (accepting a minimum of 120 children a year) and a health centre which offers primary health care services, health screening, medical laboratory tests, radiology, sonar and ECG, as well as pulmonary and gynaecological examinations. The buildings are all in a modern design, with several coffee shops and cafeterias, a large gym centre, two football fields, a mosque and 13 different shops for students. Located along the Tigris River, Baghdad, Iraq’s largest city, was founded in the 8th Century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Now, torn between its glorious past and its recent bloody history, Iraq is a country in turmoil. However, the Iraqi capital is getting back to normal, buzzing with restaurants and cafes open until the early morning.
