Where academic excellence meets real-world impact

At TMU, we tackle real-world challenges in pursuit of positive change. This commitment is our defining characteristic – it makes us who we are as an institution and community. From leading academics and cutting-edge research that meets evolving societal needs to a culture of inclusivity and the impact our students make, our determination to improve lives is the force that fuels our creativity and our passion for innovation.

TMU stands as a vital city builder, actively shaping the landscape of Toronto, Brampton and beyond through its academic, scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities and community engagement initiatives. Anchored at the heart of these dynamic cities, TMU is a trailblazer in innovation. Our commitment to social justice fuels our community of changemakers to address our cities’ most pressing challenges and build a brighter future.

Academic programming is the foundation of TMU’s mission. With curricular offerings rooted in experiential learning that prepare graduates for success, the university is committed to programming that reflects student demand, societal needs, employment opportunities and interest from potential employers. In the fall of 2025, TMU opened its new School of Medicine in Brampton, Ontario. Focusing on the primary care needs of diverse and medically underserved populations, the school is committed to graduating compassionate, respectful, future-ready clinicians who provide outstanding holistic health care and lead in health system transformation and innovation.

TMU is challenging conventional approaches to education and SRC activity, empowering our students, staff and faculty to lead positive change for our university, our communities and our society.

Innovation as a way of life

Creativity has the power to transform entire industries. Across disciplines, we’re harnessing our creativity to find novel solutions. Home to the #1 university-based incubator network in the world, we’re working to turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities, leveraging tech to create inclusive and prosperous communities—online and on the ground. Zone Learning, TMU’s 10-Zone incubator network, provides Toronto’s ecosystem with an accessible first step for early-stage startups and entrepreneurs, as well as support for growing their ventures. Students from any discipline can apply their degree coursework or their personal interest to real-world startups, causes, companies, projects or ventures. At any time of year, you’ll find more than 300 startups on campus. Each incubator, or “zone”, provides a suite of support for the entrepreneur – from coaching and access to customers, to funding connections and a community of thousands of entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

TMU also has several innovation hubs that empower students with a philosophy of entrepreneurial thinking and passion to achieve extraordinary goals. Students can explore new ideas in fields such as artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and business, Indigenous creativity, design, technology, gaming, food and nutrition, arts and entertainment, social issues and more. Through a transdisciplinary approach to learning, cutting-edge tech and active support, students have the opportunity to amplify their creative projects and collaborate with peers to develop real-world solutions and launch global projects.

Research that matters

TMU is a hub for world-leading researchers working to solve complex real-world problems. Our approach to SRC combines excellence and relevance to expand knowledge and understanding of the most important issues facing the world today. Innovation is at the core of our research mandate. Our faculty and students are increasingly participating in significant research partnerships and connecting to broad research networks to address real-world challenges to drive economic growth and improve quality of life for Canadians.

Building the cities of tomorrow takes a collaborative effort that crosses disciplines and sectors. From critical work in urban transportation and energy solutions to leading research on cybersecurity, democratic engagement and migration, immigration and settlement, our strong focus on innovation and evidence-based research has made us a preferred partner for government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, communities and individuals. Whether it’s developing innovative solutions to pressing environmental issues, informing public policy or enriching cultural life through artistic expression, TMU researchers are making a meaningful difference.
