The RWTH Aachen University was founded in 1870 after Prince William of Prussia decided to use a donation to set up an institute of technology somewhere in the Rhine Province. Funding local banks and an insurance company meant that it was eventually located in Aaachen, so building work began in 1865 and doors opened to 223 students during the Franco-Prussian War. There was a strong focus on engineering and particularly the local mining industry. 

As Germany’s westernmost important city, Aachen is situated at the heart of Europe and very close to the Dutch and Belgian border, so RWTH Aachen – or Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen – benefits greatly from a mix of cultures and languages. Although faculties of philosophy and medicine were introduced in the 1960s, it is still most famous for natural sciences and engineering – and, since 2014, has joined forces with the city to give a prestigious annual Engineering Award to a prominent figure in the field.

The university has always had strong ties with industry, creating a European equivalent of Silicon Valley around it, and attracted exceptional levels of external funding to its researchers. For its size, Aachen is the dominant German city for university spin-off companies and offices of engineering firms.

The world’s first wind tunnel and particle accelerator were both developed at RWTH Aachen. Major innovations created onsite include a pioneering aircraft made entirely of metal and a diesel soot filter.

In its strategy for 2020, RWTH Aachen makes clear its commitment to interdisciplinary research, which, along with diversity, internationalization and natural sciences, forms one of the four core themes of the work being carried out at its research park. It also aims to be to the top German university of technology and one of the five best in Europe.

The position will be based in the Charles Perkins Centre, a state-of-the-art research facility located on the University of Sydney's Camperdown campus. The NeuroMolecular Discovery Group The lab, led by Dr. Rebecca San Gil, is dedicated to discovering genes and proteins with therapeutic potential to combat neurodegenerative diseases, particularly motor neuron disease and frontotemporal dementia. This role presents an opportunity to work together with a team of motivated individuals to develop novel treatments and conduct preclinical testing of strategies that target the molecular mechanisms that cause neurodegenerative diseases. We are reconceiving the systems of health through our revolutionary approach to easing the burden of chronic diseases - obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases - through innovative research collaborations and partnerships. The role The key responsibilities of the Research Assistant will include: contributing to the design and development of research protocols, ensuring timely execution of research activities assisting with data collection and analysis, ensuring data quality and accuracy coordinating with the team to produce quality reports, verify data accuracy within university systems, and actively engage in compliance initiatives to uphold ethics and biosafety regulations keeping clear and accurate records of experimental methodology and results and assisting with effective and data management using a laboratory notebook or digital research notebook purchasing chemicals, reagents, and consumables as well as ensuring appropriate storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals, reagents, and samples/specimens. Maintenance of lab and university inventories undertaking laboratory research including, bacterial culture and mammalian cell culture and transfection, differentiation and culture of neurons from human iPSC lines, assistance with managing experimental mouse colonies techniques such as immunoblotting, immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy (confocal, and high content), flow cytometry and qPCR. About you Essential bachelor of Science (Honours) with major or minor in cellular and molecular biology or an equivalent combination of relevant research experience and/or education/training expertise in cell culture of immortalised cell lines, culture of iPSC-derived human neurons, transfection of cells/neurons with plasmid DNA, cell lysis and protein extraction and RNA purification experience in immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy (including confocal microscopy), immunoblotting, qPCR, and/or flow cytometry ability to work independently and to multi-task experiments while meeting timelines; self-motivated and independent thinking with enthusiasm to achieve research goals; demonstrated capacity to work effectively both with or without direct supervision and as part of a team excellent communication, record-keeping, and organisational skills ability and willingness to learn new techniques and optimise experimental approaches awareness of laboratory safety, and occupational health and safety protocols, contributes to the safe and efficient operation of research equipment, infrastructure, methodologies and protocols. Desirable experience in designing plasmid DNA constructs, an understanding of concepts in CRISPR gene editing/knockout/activation experience using software for the statistical analysis and visualisation of data (e.g., GraphPad Prism, R Studio). Experience in teaching programme development and management will be an advantage. The appointee will contribute to the overall teaching and action research effectiveness in a wide spectrum of sustainability-related activities at the Centre, and be responsible for curriculum planning and development, validation and accreditation of new and/or existing programmes, and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He/She will also support the work of the Academy for Sustainable Communities established under the Centre and perform other teaching and research-related duties as assigned by the Director. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At the current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.
