Northwest University is a public institution located in Xi'an city, Shaanxi Province, in Northwest China. The university can trace its origins back to 1902, and has undergone a series of name changes since being established. It assumed its present name in 1912, before being renamed National Northwest University 11 years later. It was then called National Xi'an Provisional University after the merger with National Beiping University becoming the National Northwest Associated University in 1938, and then National Northwest University again in 1939. The university has three campuses: the Taibai Campus, the Taoyuan Campus and the Chang’an Campus. Together, they cover an area of almost 400 acres. In 1978 it was designated as one of China's National Key Universities, which are recognised as prestigious and receive a high level of support from the central government. It was one of the first universities in China empowered to set up doctoral, postdoctoral and master’s programs. The university describes its vision as “promoting the national spirit, integrating the ideas from around the world and shouldering the responsibility of developing northwest China”, and its motto is: “Fairness, Integrity, Diligence and Simplicity.” NWU attaches great importance to international exchange and cooperation programmes, and has established collaborative relationships with more than 100 universities in more than 20 countries, including the UK, the US, Germany, France and Japan. The city of Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi province, and is best known internationally as the home of the Terracotta Army or Emperor Qin Shi Huang. It is one of the oldest cities in China, and is the most populous in Northwest China.

Qualification & Experience A minimum of a Master’s degree in a related field. At least 2 years teaching experience at tertiary level, 1 year post graduate or equivalent experience, a doctoral qualification acceptable to the university will be an advantage. Some experience in teaching, research, consultancy or professional activity is a bonus for the course of instructions or an appropriate combination built up over periods of normally not less than 2 years of post-qualification. The Position The Research Environment Specialist plays a key role in developing, maintaining, and supporting high-quality research environments that enable advanced computation, data analysis, and AI/ML workflows at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI). The role supports major scientific domains—including climate and weather, geosciences, national water management, bioinformatics, and astronomy—by ensuring researchers can effectively utilise NCI’s HPC, cloud, data, and GPU platforms. Working under the broad direction of the Software and Data Modernisation Manager, the Specialist is responsible for deploying and optimising scientific software stacks, integrating tools and services into NCI’s computational ecosystem, and supporting users with expert advice on HPC, data science, and AI/ML workflows. The position also leads the development of documentation, training materials, and community engagement activities to ensure users can access, understand, and leverage NCI’s capabilities. The role requires strong technical expertise in scientific computing, HPC environments, Linux-based workflows, and modern AI/ML technologies. It also demands excellent communication skills, a proactive service mindset, and the ability to collaborate across teams and with external stakeholders. The Specialist is expected to stay current with emerging technologies, contribute to performance optimisation and software modernisation efforts, and uphold ANU’s standards for safety, equity, and professional conduct. The Person The ideal candidate holds postgraduate qualifications or equivalent experience in HPC, data science and AI/ML, with strong domain expertise in areas such as climate, weather, environmental science or related fields. They demonstrate proven capability in developing, optimising and deploying scientific workflows across HPC, cloud and GPU environments, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Fortran, C, R or Julia and experience with modern AI/ML frameworks.
