About this position: The Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 15 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science assembles an international, ambitious and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.  The Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science at the Centre supports PhD students in the finishing phase of their dissertation project through short-term finishing contracts. These employments are provided to students who have signed a doctoral thesis agreement and have already made significant progress in their doctoral thesis project. Positions have a limited duration with an option for extension. One 4-month position is available for students of the Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science through this job announcement. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration in the context of your doctoral thesis project, which means: Involvement in and finalizing of a research project as detailed in your doctoral thesis agreement Publications and presentations Involvement in project applications for third-party funding Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement Supervision of trainees and students Meeting and consulting with your supervisor(s) on a regular basis in order to prioritize your tasks and get the necessary support to complete your dissertation successfully in time. Actively seeking support (workshops, training, coaching etc.) if necessary We expect you to make significant progress on your doctoral thesis through related milestones during the time of the short-term contract. Description The Embodied AI and Robotics (AIR) Laboratory in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Senior Research Engineer to advance applied research in artificial intelligence and robotics. The successful applicant will contribute to cutting-edge research and development in Embodied AI, with a focus on integrating AI-driven perception, reasoning, and action to enable intelligent robotic behavior across diverse real-world environments. The position involves working on embodied intelligence systems that combine vision-language-action (VLA) modeling, robotic perception and interaction, and autonomous task execution. The Senior Research Engineer will play a key role in bridging algorithmic innovation and robot deployment, leading experimental design, system integration, and evaluation on real robotic platforms. The Embodied AI and Robotics Lab (AIR) develops intelligent robotic systems capable of understanding, learning, and acting in complex, dynamic settings. The team works at the intersection of computer vision, multimodal learning, and robotics to create next-generation embodied agents that interact naturally and safely with humans and their environments. The lab operates in close collaboration with NYU’s global network, including NYU New York, and provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment involving faculty, postdoctoral researchers, engineers, and students.
