The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, officially founded in 1837, is now the largest state institution of higher learning in Greece, and among the largest universities in Europe. 

The university was founded by King Otto of Greece and was the first to exist in the liberated Greek state and surrounding area of the Southeast Europe as well. What began as a university of four faculties, has now doubled to eight to include: theology, philosophy, law, economics and the sciences. 

There are three campuses, with the main one in Ano Ilisia, Zografou, while other smaller faculties are located in Goudi and Dafni. 

The University Club, founded in 1923, operates as an annex of the university and a public Corporate Body,  aimed at improving the living conditions of students. Located in the centre of Athens, The University Club aspires to achieve its aim through the provision of free health care, meals, physical education equipment, the operation of health services, restaurants, a canteen, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, a reading room, a library, and computer labs.

While at university, the Club helps students in a non-academic manner organising lectures, concerts, choirs, exhibitions, theatre and dance performances, seminars, excursions in Greece and abroad and developing international student relations and exchanges In addition, it facilitates students after graduation by helping them search for work.

In 1993 the university alongside Japan’s Nippon Foundation established the creation of a Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) programme in Athens, in order for the university to support students pursuing postgraduate and/or PhD studies in fields within the humanities and social science disciplines.

Notable alumni include Dimitri Nanopoulos, a Greek physicist who is one of the most regularly cited researchers in the world, Helene Ahrweiler, a Greek university professor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Greece, and Xenophon Zolotas, a Greek economist and former interim prime minister of Greece.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  Job Details This Research Engineer will contribute to an international joint project related to policy-making in urban planning and design, focusing on developing a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework and tool. The work will involve integrating results from GeoTOPSIS and/or VectorMCDA in QGIS, enhancing spatial decision support for blue–green infrastructure and ecosystem service evaluation. The Research Engineer will lead the software development and interface programming, working closely with the GIS Research Fellow and interdisciplinary project team members to create a user-friendly, scalable decision-support tool for planners and policymakers. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Work closely with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely completion of all project deliverables. Implement and enhance GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA algorithms within QGIS using Python or equivalent programming frameworks. Develop a user-friendly interface (QGIS plugin or web-based application) for decision-making and data visualization. Collaborate with the GIS Research Fellow to integrate ecosystem service layers and model outputs. Conduct tool testing, validation, and iterative refinement based on stakeholder feedback. Manage documentation, data pipelines, and version control. Support system deployment on a secure project server and ensure cross-platform interoperability. Assist in project management and support the team in facilitating and organizing workshops, stakeholder sessions, and policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geomatics, Environmental Informatics, or related fields. Strong programming skills in Python, R, or JavaScript for spatial analysis, interface development, or web applications. Experience in plugin or dashboard development (e.g., PyQGIS, Dash, Streamlit, or web-GIS frameworks). Familiarity with GIS concepts and geospatial data structures; experience with QGIS or ArcGIS will be an advantage. Ability to translate analytical models into intuitive, interactive user interfaces. Good teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to learn new tools and frameworks independently. Additional Note: While prior experience with GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA is not mandatory, it will be considered a strong advantage. About the role The PDRA will conduct research within the Wellcome-funded Speculative Fertilities**: Finance, Pharma, and the Future of Reproduction** project, which aims to transform the social study of reproduction by analysing the intersection of the financial and fertility sectors as a key site of reproductive politics. Using qualitative methods, this project consists of three work streams analysing case studies that may transform the future of reproduction, including automated IVF, in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) and mifepristone (abortion pill) as contraception. The advertised position focuses on the latter work stream, which will explore the socio-cultural as well as political-economic dimensions of clinical trials that explore the possibility of using mifepristone as a weekly contraceptive. The research will focus on the social dynamics of both the clinical trials themselves and the steps towards registration, authorisation and implementation after the trial finishes. This is a full-time role, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 36 months. Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7.
