We are seeking to appoint a new Research Fellow to join the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton, UK. This position is on a fixed term basis till the end of February 2027. This position focuses on the development of innovative microfluidic-based sensors for continuous, in-situ chemical and biochemical analysis. About the Role: The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team dedicated to designing and developing state-of-the-art microfluidic sensors. These sensors aim to address critical challenges in miniaturised chemical and biochemical assay and analysis, with applications spanning environmental monitoring and beyond. The position offers a rich mix of research, laboratory work, field testing in collaboration with industrial partners, and academic writing. Key Responsibilities: Develop chemical and biochemical assays and analyses, conduct comprehensive laboratory experiments, data analysis and reporting. Design, develop, and test microfluidic devices for miniaturised chemical and biochemical sensing. Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to integrate sensor technology into broader systems. Participate in the planning and execution of in situ fieldwork, which includes travel. Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences. Requirements: PhD or equivalent qualifications and experience in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related field. Strong and proven record in academic writing and publication in recognised journals. Extensive laboratory experience with a hands-on approach to chemical and biochemical assays and analysis. Proficiency in a wide range of analytical chemistry techniques and methodologies. Ability to travel or drive to various locations for in situ work as required. Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. Desirable Skills: Experience in microfluidic device design and fabrication. Knowledge of sensor integration and data analysis. A proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation. Lecturer (Product Design) The School of Spatial & Product Design, within the Faculty of Design, seeks to appoint a Lecturer for Product Design. Reporting to the Head of School and Programme Leader, you will teach in the BA (Hons) Product Design programme, contributing to a dynamic studio environment that integrates conceptual thinking, material exploration and emerging technologies. The ideal candidate should have the expertise and ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: product and industrial design, digital and rapid prototyping, fabrication technologies, material experimentation, design for manufacture, interaction between analogue and digital processes, and interdisciplinary design practices spanning art, science and technology. As lecturer, your key responsibilities include academic preparation, teaching and delivery of specialised knowledge/skills and cognitive-based contents to ensure students’ learning objectives are met. You will work collaboratively with teams within/across programmes and Faculty to enhance the strategic and organisational plans and ensure that the programme achieves its strategic ambitions and objectives. You will contribute to a studio culture that bridges conceptual design thinking with hands-on making, supporting the integration of workshop-based practices with design studio teaching. This includes fostering an environment where experimentation, prototyping and iterative development are central to learning. You should be comfortable working across both analogue and digital platforms, and be able to guide students in navigating these intersections. Other responsibilities include coordination of academic learning activities, academic administration and organisation, feedback on assignments, conducting assessments and marking, student mentoring and recruitment. You will also contribute to the academic development of the programme, work as a team and be involved in specific programme activities, projects, exhibitions and other cross-faculty initiatives. The role may also involve contributing to the development of workshop culture within the School, supporting the alignment between technical skill-building and conceptual design inquiry, and participating in interdisciplinary collaborations across programmes and Faculties. Requirements: Postgraduate qualification, preferably at PhD level, or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
 At least five years of tertiary-level teaching experience with knowledge of Higher Education Quality Assurance Framework and at least three years of full-time relevant professional practice.
 For Senior Lecturer, at least nine years and above or the equivalent of postgraduate teaching experience in practice-based arts at tertiary level and six years of proven track record of professional experience in related design fields or and/or tertiary design education with a PhD qualification.
 Substantive professional practice in the areas of product design, industrial design, fabrication and prototyping, material innovation, or related design fields.
 Demonstrated expertise in integrating analogue and digital design methodologies, including workshop-based processes and emerging fabrication technologies.
 Relevant knowledge of design history and theory and adequate involvement in relevant design practice and/or have established research projects and publications.
 A passion for teaching with the ability to nurture and encourage excellence in teaching and student learning.
 Possess excellent communication, organisational and team working skills and academic administrative skills.
 A positive attitude to research, and preferably a personal research profile. The successful candidate should also demonstrate capability and interest in the following areas: Bridging design, art and craft practices within studio-based teaching, fostering a strong relationship between conceptual thinking and making.
 Strong engagement with material exploration, making, and iterative prototyping as central to the design process.
 Ability to guide students in scaled model-making as a design methodology, with emphasis on proportion, form, detail, and texture.
 Experience in integrating physical computing (e.g. sensors, motors, microcontrollers) into product or spatial design outcomes.
 Familiarity with hybrid workflows that combine analogue making with digital design and fabrication processes.
 Interest in supporting a distributed studio-makerspace model, where making is embedded within daily studio practice rather than confined to workshops.
 Ability to operate across interdisciplinary domains spanning design, technology, science, and craft.
 Experience in developing hands-on workshops, exercises, and experimental learning environments that support exploratory and practice-driven learning.
 Understanding of contemporary shifts in product design practice, including:
sustainability and regenerative approaches, emerging technologies and their impact on authorship, making and fabrication.
 Ability to support students across the full design process, from concept development through prototyping to final presentation, including both physical and/or interactive outcomes.
