The Department has existing strength in Chinese history, Hong Kong history, public history, and global history, along with various subfields such as media, gender, animal, and environmental studies.

General Requirements

Applicants should hold a PhD in History or a closely related field. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to research and teaching excellence, with an outstanding track record of scholarly publications in internationally leading peer-reviewed journals and major scholarly presses, as well as extensive experience in teaching and course development. The ability to contribute to the Department’s strategic areas—global Asia, public history, or/and digital history—is essential. Experience in digital humanities will be considered an advantage. The appointee is expected to submit applications for RGC grants, other local/overseas competitive grants and/or fellowship schemes.

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Department of History (https://www.ln.edu.hk/history/) invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position in global history. We are particularly interested in candidates specializing in areas not currently covered by our academic staff, such as South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Applicants with expertise in digital methods for historical analysis, as well as knowledge and practical skills in using digital applications for research and pedagogy, will be given preference.

General Requirements

Applicants should have obtained / been conferred a PhD degree in history or a related discipline, or an equivalent qualification for no more than five years prior to the commencement of the appointment. They should have a good track record of publications and grant applications, a strong commitment to teaching excellence, and an interest in taking on service. The appointee is expected to publish scholarly outputs in international journals and/or with leading publishers, apply for competitive grants administered by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, other local/overseas competitive grants and/or fellowship schemes, teach courses in their areas of specialty (typically two to three courses per academic year); and perform administrative duties in accordance with the current guidelines.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Commencing salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. We are recruiting for a Research Fellow to deliver on the project "Digital Harms, Democratic Costs (DHDC)". DHDC envisions a more gender-equal and inclusive democratic future where online participation by women and girls is not constrained by fear, reputational harm, or synthetic manipulation by AI tools. DHDC realises this vision with a dual focus on how harmful-but-legal behaviours and AI-mediated distortions individually or in combination shape violence against women and girls in political life online, and prototyping practical, rights-preserving interventions that empower Women MPs, inform policing and justice responses, and strengthen democratic resilience. The selected candidate will help deliver this important project by engaging directly with Women MPs and their staff and through data analysis on public online discourse on UK political topics (e.g., on social media posts). 

The post is currently funded until 31 March 2026, although there may be a further extension, should additional funding become available.

About you

The successful candidate will:


	Hold a PhD in Computer Science or related topic (essential)
	Have proficiency in analysing large data sets (essential), including ideally:
	
		social media data (desirable)
		work on online harms such as hate speech (desirable)

	PhD supervision capacity;
	Excellent publications record in an area of expertise;
