About Jagiellonian University

Jagiellonian University was founded in 1364 by the Polish king Casimir the Great, and was at that point known as the Studium Generale. It is the country’s oldest higher education institution and, at 652 years, is also one of the oldest in Europe, having survived a number of invasions and two world wars.

Among its alumni are several major historical figures, including astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who enrolled as a student in 1491, and more recently Karol Wojtyła (later Pope John Paul II), who was one of around 800 students educated in secret by Jagiellonian during the Second World War when the Nazis closed the university during the Polish occupation.

After the war, Jagiellonian became a place of refuge for academics forced to leave Lviv and Vilnius owing to the alteration of the Polish border.

Today, the university is made up of 15 faculties. It has 4,000 academics and more than 40,000 students, 65 per cent of whom are women.

Its campus is centrally located in the city of Kraków, Poland’s former capital. Local and national government funding, coupled with funds from the European Union, have recently seen the construction of a new site for the Faculty of Chemistry as well as continued work on the construction of the Centre for Natural Sciences Education.

The university is replete with historical buildings, the oldest being the Collegium Maius, dating back to 1400, which houses the Jagiellonian Museum.

The Jagiellonian Library is one of Poland's biggest, containing 6.5 million volumes, and housing a collection of medieval manuscripts that includes Copernicus' De Revolutionibus.

Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? Such questions are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments. Your personal sphere of influence: As university assistant (PraeDoc) on this 4-year position, you will be part of the research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.- Prof. Dr. Philip Walther. The group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics, and a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions. The main activities reach from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. You will also benefit from being a fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), being part of a thriving community with more than 100 quantum scientists on the premises, about 300 quantum researchers in Vienna. The Walther Group unites an international team of scientists who are passionate about research in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum technologies. Our 35 researchers, from undergraduate student, PhD candidate to Postdoc are working together on mostly experimental topics in small subgroups. Teamwork is a key factor to our group’s success. Together we have assembled a unique skill set and knowledge base in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum foundations as well as quantum-gravity interface. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You are involved in a specific and well-funded research project dedicated to experimental quantum foundations and indefinite causal order. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will contribute to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) within the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You will fill some administrative tasks, contributing to the success and self-organization of the group for research, teaching and administration. You will continuously stay informed about the state of the art in your field. You contribute to outreach by publications, conference presentations and public activities.   This is part of your personality: You have completed your Master's degree or Diploma in physics and written your thesis in the field of quantum optics. You have experience with quantum foundations, photonic platforms, non-linear processes and table-top experiments. You have experience in academic writing. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. It pays particular attention to how these arguments have often relied on appeals to certain understandings of theology, race, gender, climate, and disease. The successful candidate will be expected to produce high-quality scholarly publications, contribute to project workshops, assist Professor Glanville in the management of the research project, and contribute to teaching in the Department of International Relations.
