Established more than 200 years ago, in 1810, the Humboldt University of Berlin is one of the most prestigious universities not only in Germany, but in Europe. It has a world class reputation in arts and humanities fields.

Originally known simply as the University of Berlin, it was given its current name in 1949, and is named after both its founder, Wilhelm von Humboldt, and his brother, the esteemed naturalist and alumnus of the institution, Alexander von Humboldt.

HU Berlin is recognised as one of Europe’s pioneering higher education institutions. Wilhelm von Humboldt is credited with developing a model for universities that saw a closer relationship between research and teaching - a model that is still followed in higher education institutions across the world today.

The institution’s academic clout is evidenced by the fact that it has educated no fewer than 29 Nobel prizewinners, including Max Born, who won the prize for physics in 1954; Theodor Mommsen, who won the prize for for literature in 1902; and Wassily Leontief who won the prize for economics in 1973.

In 2006, the federal government’s German Universities Excellence Initiative began allocating additional funding to institutions that proved they were leaders in science and research. In 2012, HU Berlin, was one of 11 institutions to receive this money, enhancing its reputation as one of the country’s elite universities.

Among HU Berlin’s famous alumni are Marxism founders Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, as well as novelist Alfred Döblin, and theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher. Composer Felix Mendelssohn was also a student there, while Albert Einstein spent time as a professor at the university.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the international French-Austrian project ChirTrans: Chiral transport controlled by flow microstructure co-financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the French National Research Agency (ANR). Where you will be: The position is hosted by the research group Computational and Soft Matter Physics at the Faculty of Physics in the group of Dr. Andreas Zöttl. About the project: ChirTrans investigates how chirality of swimming bacteria determines their active transport processes in complex microstructured heterogeneous environments and in complex shear flows. It combines computational and theoretical modeling at the University of Vienna with experiments performed at ESPCI Paris. Our previous work demonstrated the importance of bacterial chirality in transport in simple microchannel flows and near plane surfaces. ChirTrans now aims to uncover how chirality impacts bacterial transport in more complex microstructured environments. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to internationally visible, frontier research. You will have the chance to help build and shape a high-impact interdisciplinary research group while working on your own research. Your responsibilities: As a Postdoctoral Researcher you will: Conduct independent and collaborative research on computational modeling and simulation of bacterial dynamics using coarse-grained hydrodynamic modeling (Brownian Dynamics, Multiparticle Collision Dynamics, etc) Contribute to and lead academic publications in top-tier journals Collaborate closely with experimental collaboration partner at ESPCI Paris led by Prof. Anke Lindner Present research outcomes at international conferences You may contribute to teaching activities depending on interest and availability, in which case you participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. Role Summary We are seeking a Lecturer in Applied Computing to join our team at the Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Arts (BIFCA) in Wuhan, China. https://www.bcu.ac.uk/international/bifca. BIFCA is a highly successful collaboration between Wuhan Textile University (WTU) and Birmingham City University, offering a unique cross-cultural experience and providing an excellent environment for innovative teaching. Students completing their BIFCA programmes gain a dual award from BCU and WTU. With a series of innovative, technology-driven, and professionally oriented programmes, BIFCA represents the new era of quality-oriented, collaborative transnational education (TNE) that is responsive to the needs of all stakeholders. Students can choose to study their entire programme in China or complete part of it in China and finish at BCU. Our teaching commitment at BIFCA is expanding, and we are seeking a lecturer to contribute to this ongoing development. The position offers a unique opportunity to live and work in a popular part of China on a two-year fixed-term contract, with the option to renew after the two-year period is complete.
