Hood College is a liberal arts institution in the city of Frederick in Maryland, USA. The college was founded as The Woman's College of Frederick and was officially incorporated Jan 12, 1897. Local philanthropist Margaret Hood took a keen interest in its development. Mrs Hood donated several tens of thousands of dollars to ensure the college’s success in its early years and in 1912 the board of directors voted to change the school’s name to Hood College. The college became coeducational in 1971 but men were not allowed to live on campus until 2003.

Today Hood College is a respected co-educational liberal arts college teaching a wide range of postgraduate and undergraduate programs. The college offers around 30 undergraduate majors, 50 minors and in the region of 15 master’s degree programs divided into almost 20 academic departments. Students can study anything from accounting to ceramic arts to mathematics.

The College has several longstanding traditions including midnight breakfasts held on the night before final exams and served by faculty and staff. Each new class also designs and paints a banner to be hung in the dining hall, after graduation these banners are displayed alongside those of previous years in the Whitaker Campus Centre.

The college buildings are a mix of old, historic halls and more modern facilities spread over a green, leafy space in Frederick. There are sports fields and indoor sporting and leisure facilities as well as the campus chapel, college library, pool and arts centre.
