World University Rankings 2019 by subject: life sciences

The 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ table for life sciences subjects uses the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

It highlights the universities that are leading across agriculture and forestry, biological sciences, veterinary science and sport science subjects.

This year, we have made a small adjustment to the eligibility criterion for academic staff in the subject tables, which has resulted in more universities being eligible for inclusion.

The 2019 life sciences ranking has also expanded to include 751 universities, up from 502 last year.

Harvard University tops the table for the third year in a row, while the University of Cambridge remains in second, and the University of Oxford holds on to third.

Tsinghua University is the highest newcomer at 10th place, becoming the first mainland Chinese university to feature in the top 10 of the ranking. Peking University has also risen to join the top 20 at 19th place.

Several universities in France have also become more prominent. Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris has climbed 31 places to 44th position, while Montpellier University is 89th, up from the 176-200 band. Sorbonne University makes its debut at 46th.
