World University Rankings 2018 by subject: business and economics

The 2018 Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ table for business and economics subjects employs the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

It highlights the universities that are leading across business and management, accounting and finance and economics and econometrics subjects.

The weightings for teaching, research and international outlook in the business and economics table has altered slightly this year, while the minimum publication threshold for universities to be included has decreased.

This year’s ranking has expanded to include 200 institutions, up from 100 last year.

This ranking is focussed - like the World University Rankings - on research and academic reputation, and is different from the teaching-focussed, consumer-driven rankings of business school programmes being developed by THE with the Wall Street Journal

London Business School is the highest new entry in the table at fourth place; for the first time this year institutions that do not have undergraduates are eligible for inclusion in this list.

Overall, the top of the table is dominated by institutions in the US and UK.

Stanford University takes the top spot after swapping places with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, thanks to improvements in its citations and teaching scores.

Asian universities also do well in the table, with Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the National University of Singapore and Peking University all making the top 20.

In total, 27 countries from five continents make the top 200 table, demonstrating that leading universities for business and economics can be found all over the world.
