This role offers the opportunity to work on applied, industry-engaged research with direct environmental and infrastructure impact, while building independence, leadership capability, and a strong research profile within a collaborative STEM environment. About the Role As a Research Fellow (Level A), you will undertake high-quality research aligned with RMIT's research strategy, working with increasing autonomy as your expertise develops. You will collaborate closely with academic colleagues, industry partners, and government stakeholders to deliver impactful research outcomes. Your work will span field trials, laboratory analysis, device optimisation, and techno-economic evaluation, contributing to publications, funding proposals, and real-world implementation pathways. You may also contribute to limited undergraduate teaching and research supervision, supporting the next generation of engineers and researchers. About You You are a technically strong and self-driven researcher who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering research, industry application, and environmental impact. To be successful, you will bring: Demonstrated expertise in fatberg management research, including: Strong understanding of FOG deposition mechanisms in wastewater systems Design and optimisation of FOG management devices Planning and oversight of field trials Extensive experience in sample characterisation Capability in techno-economic analysis to assess feasibility and performance Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field. Ability to generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government. Job Description: We are seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to join our team for a fixed-term project. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and validating objective texture testing methods that can accurately categorize foods within the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework, with a specific focus on Level 5 (Minced & Moist). This role will involve designing custom test fixtures, conducting practical laboratory work, and performing data analysis to create a robust and reliable testing protocol. Key Responsbilities: Conduct a comprehensive literature review on food rheology, texture analysis, particle analysis, image analysis and the IDDSI framework. Design and execute experiments to develop new instrumental texture analysis methods suitable for IDDSI Level 5 foods. Validate new methods against existing standards and a sensory panel to ensure accuracy and clinical relevance. Collect, analyze, and interpret data from instrumental and sensory evaluations. Document all experimental procedures, findings, and analyses in technical reports and prepare presentations to industry stakeholders and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborate with a research team, including food scientists, clinicians, and engineers, to ensure the developed methods are practical and clinically relevant. Job Requirements: A degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. A Master's or Ph.D. in a related research field is advantageous. Experience with instrumental texture, image analysis and particle sizing techniques (e.g., texture analyzers, universal testing machines) is highly desirable. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in material characterization techniques, such as stress-strain characterization. Proficiency in analysis software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, R, or other statistical software). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. About the role The PDRA will conduct research within the Wellcome-funded Speculative Fertilities**: Finance, Pharma, and the Future of Reproduction** project, which aims to transform the social study of reproduction by analysing the intersection of the financial and fertility sectors as a key site of reproductive politics. Using qualitative methods, this project consists of three work streams analysing case studies that may transform the future of reproduction, including automated IVF, in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) and mifepristone (abortion pill) as contraception. The advertised position focuses on the latter work stream, which will explore the socio-cultural as well as political-economic dimensions of clinical trials that explore the possibility of using mifepristone as a weekly contraceptive. The research will focus on the social dynamics of both the clinical trials themselves and the steps towards registration, authorisation and implementation after the trial finishes. This is a full-time role, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 36 months. Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development.
