Badji Mokhtar University, also named the Annaba University or UBMA, was founded in 1975 and is located in Annaba, on Algeria’s northeastern coast. There are seven faculties: the faculty of medical sciences, the faculty of science, the faculty of engineering sciences, the faculty of earth sciences, the faculty of law and law sciences, the faculty of literature, humanities and social sciences and the faculty of economic sciences. The faculties and their buildings are spread over four districts in Annaba: the Annaba City Campus, the Sid Achour Campus, the El Bouni Campus and the Sid Ammar Campus. The Badji Mokhtar University has 45,000 students, 2,210 lectures and 1,900 administrative and support staff. It offers courses at an undergraduate and postgraduate level, which are taught in Arabic and French. All courses are recognised by the Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique, Algérie (the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Algeria). Every year over 8,000 students from the Arabic and Francophone world attend the university and it is involved in several bilateral exchange agreements. There are 65 research laboratories and 400 ongoing national research projects, with research languages being Arabic, French and some English. Annaba is the fourth largest city in Algeria and is characterised by its involvement in industry, technology, agriculture, forestry, mining and metallurgy. The seaport city, which is close to Tunisia, has a Mediterranean climate with long, dry, hot summers and in winter, rain is abundant by North African standards and can be torrential.

The research will document this development and examine what measures are being taken to remedy this problem. Position Description and Selection Criteria: PD - Electronics Engineering Specialist-ANUO67 and 8.pdf The Position The Electronics Engineering Specialist will play a key role in designing, developing, testing, delivering, and commissioning advanced systems such as detector readout electronics, instrument control systems, and embedded hardware for ground-based astronomical instruments, telescopes, and civil space applications. This position supports ANU’s strategic objectives in astronomy and space by contributing to national and international research collaborations involving telescope instrumentation, satellite payloads, and spaceflight hardware. The role spans the entire engineering lifecycle—from requirements definition and circuit design through prototyping, testing, and deployment—and requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure systems meet performance, reliability, and compliance standards, including product assurance requirements. The Person To excel in this role, you will have Post graduate qualifications in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or a relevant undergraduate degree with a minimum of four years’ experience in scientific or aerospace instrumentation or a relevant field. Demonstrated proficiency in two or more of the following technical areas: detector systems (e.g., CCD, CMOS, IR), instrument control electronics, analogue/digital circuit design, PCB layout, and embedded systems development. The Area The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) is a national facility in Canberra and part of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA). The Centre was established to support the development of the next generation of instruments for astronomy and space science. Our staff have built specialised astronomical instruments for some of the world’s largest optical telescopes; we are currently designing and building instruments to be mounted on the next generation of extremely large telescopes. The School Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) operates Australia’s national optical observatory and has access to the world’s largest optical telescopes. We are based at the historic Mount Stromlo Observatory on the outskirts of Canberra. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  Job Details This Research Fellow will contribute to the UrEco 2030+ project: “Optimizing Urban Ecosystem Services Model for Urban Climate and Biodiversity in Singapore towards 2030 and Beyond.” This position requires experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related fields, with added expertise in ecosystem services assessment, ecological engineering, social sciences, policy making, environmental science, and/or urban environmental issues at the policy–academic interface. This position is ideal for an early- or mid-career researcher with experience in GIS or remote sensing who seeks to apply and expand their expertise in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research environment. The successful candidate will work with leading researchers and contribute to cutting-edge research and policy dialogues at the intersection of blue–green infrastructure, tropical urban ecosystem services, and urban resilience (covering themes such as urban flooding, thermal cooling, recreation, and biodiversity). The work includes Local Climate Zone (LCZ) classification and collaboration with Japanese university partners for integrated macro- to micro-scale analysis. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.  Identify, simulate, and analyse ecosystem service models using GIS, remote sensing, and field data. Manage, process, and analyse ecological and socio-economic datasets to develop and calibrate high-accuracy ecosystem service models. Conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings into conceptual frameworks and research designs. Support cross–work package integration, particularly in developing tools for blue–green infrastructure policy and decision-making. Perform quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis, and visualization. Draft and edit research reports, policy briefs, and academic manuscripts. Contribute to project management, workshop organization, and stakeholder or policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team.  To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements PhD in Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related disciplines. Strong working knowledge of GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data analysis techniques. Training or demonstrated experience in remote sensing, spatial data collection, and thematic mapping. Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, MATLAB, SPSS, Primer, Python). Experience with analytical techniques such as ANOVA, PCA, Regression, and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). Experience in ecosystem service identification and analysis is highly advantageous. Excellent data management, research design, and reporting skills. Strong communication and presentation skills in English. Highly organized, proactive, and capable of working both independently and within multidisciplinary teams. Additional Note: While prior experience in ecosystem service modelling and simulation is not mandatory, it will be considered a strong advantage. Candidates with a solid GIS or remote sensing background who demonstrate interest in applying their skills to ecosystem service assessment are encouraged to apply.
