About Maryland Institute College of Art

Basic information and contact details for Maryland Institute College of Art

institution

Established in 1826, Maryland Institute College of Art is one of the oldest and most prestigious visual arts colleges in the US.

Originally Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts, the college has changed name five times over the years. It began evening classes as early as 1849, one of the first colleges to do so. Initially offering programmes such as history, chemistry and mineralogy, it phased out courses outside the arts in 1879.

Situated in the centre of Baltimore, Maryland’s most populous city, its main building is less than half a mile from the main station. Baltimore, home to a flourishing arts scene and countless galleries, also has lots of affordable studio space.

MICA has long attracted a vast selection of guest lecturers and critics, including poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, composer John Cage and painter Sam Gilliam. A perennial high-achiever, MICA has long been considered one of the most decorated specialist colleges in the North East.

Alumni include Joan Bankemper, a visual artist well-known for her ceramics, and Abbi Jacobson, a comedian and actor who co-created sitcom Broad City.

Position description The successful candidate will work within the research project “From Clay to Code: Investigating Microbial Evolution in Response to Human Influence” funded by the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE). The project aims to establish a scientific foundation for investigating viable ancient bacteria recovered from archaeological ceramics to determine the evolutionary trajectories and adaptation mechanisms of the isolated bacteria under anthropogenic influences. Advances in ancient DNA techniques have substantially increased our understanding of past human populations, other animals as well as on ecology and evolution of microbial diseases. However, dormant forms of microbes that can persist for extremely long periods of time in the right conditions, may also act as windows to the past. The work provides the possibility to develop skills in microbiology, data analysis, bioinformatics and molecular dating methods in an international and multidisciplinary setting and gain a competitive academic CV. The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to: Advance the research project together with the team Participate in future funding application preparations for the project The work may also include teaching duties (10-20 % of annual working time).
