Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a public, research-led university located across the state of Arizona in the United States.
Established in 1899 with just 23 students, the institution did not become a university until 1966 and instead provided a basic education to students primarily from the state.
NAU has one main campus, known as Flagstaff Mountain Campus, which is located in the mountain town of Flagstaff and is surrounded by the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest.
It is a picturesque setting with almost 300 days of sunshine each year and snowfall in the winter. There are more than 20 extended NAU campuses, offering people from all over Arizona the opportunity to study at NAU.
NAU has 95 undergraduate programmes and 76 graduate programmes. Among the national and internationally renowned programmes offered by NAU are studies in forestry, education, hotel and restaurant management, applied linguistics, environmental sustainability, engineering and physical therapy.
Over the years NAU has developed a number of traditions that occur at various points throughout the year.
Among them are the autumn Family Weekend, where the families of NAU students are encouraged to visit them; Homecoming, where alumni are invited back to Flagstaff Campus for a week of activities; and True Blue Friday, held every year on 30 August – an event where all NAU students and staff are encouraged to wear NAU clothing to raise the profile of the university.
There are more than 165,000 NAU alumni, among them are vice admiral in the United States Navy Robin Braun, former Arizona governor Raul Hector Castro and best-selling author Diana Gabaldon.

Description The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Associate to contribute to the Surface Chemistry of Implants and Fabrication of Polymer Medical Devices. The successful applicant will collaborate with faculty and researchers at CENTMED to enhance the surface chemistry of implant materials, improving biocompatibility and osteointegration. This will involve surface modification of implants through methods such as plasma treatment, silanization, and the application of specialty coatings to impart corrosion resistance. Additionally, the candidate will develop polymeric lubricious coatings for catheters to minimize injury to blood vessels during the trans-catheterization process. They will characterize the surface modifications of implants using microscopy techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The candidate will also map the nanomechanical properties of implant surfaces, assessing factors such as adhesion, friction, Young’s modulus, and surface free energy using AFM. The ideal candidate will bring experience in developing polymeric medical devices by identifying unmet clinical needs through interactions with clinicians, designing and developing medical devices, and fabricating medical device prototypes. Furthermore, the candidate should have experience in polymer processing techniques, including filament extrusion, compression molding, injection molding, and fused deposition modeling. This position requires the preparation of ISO/ASTM test specimens for mechanical (tensile and flexural) testing of polymers and composites using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The candidate will also estimate the glass transition temperature of polymers and composite materials through Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and develop osteoconductive polymeric implants for skull base surgery. Furthermore, the candidate will be involved in quantifying the adsorption of biomolecules on polymeric coatings using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with dissipation monitoring to model plaque build-up in coronary blood vessels. Other responsibilities include developing orthotic assistive devices from sustainable polymers and composites and co-developing medical devices with industry partners. The candidate will also assist in filing intellectual property rights related to medical device innovations. In addition to experimental work, the candidate will collaborate with CENTMED staff and leadership to prepare technology documentation and facilitate the translation of innovations to industry. About the team: This is an opportunity to work towards a PhD in physics and to conduct world-leading research and teaching in molecular simulation and computational materials discovery. Fuel cells, photovoltaic devices, photocatalytic converters – they all are crucial elements in delivering decarbonization and sustainable energy production at a global scale within the coming decades. They all fundamentally involve energy transfer and chemical dynamics at interfaces where molecules, electrons, and light interact to deliver a certain function. The underlying mechanisms of ultrafast dynamics at surfaces triggered by light or electrons are not well understood, which, for example, limits our ability to design photocatalyst materials that deliver optimal light absorption, catalytic activity, and energy transport. Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant (praedoc), you will be part of the Computational Materials Discovery group of Professor Reinhard Maurer. This project will focus on the development of novel machine learning representations of electronic structure and quantum operators. These surrogate models will be combined with mixed quantum-classical dynamics simulation approaches to perform chemical dynamics simulations at an unprecedented scale. You will contribute to the development of broadly applicable electronic structure methods, new software, and machine learning methods with the specific goal to enable high throughput screening of optimal photocatalyst materials and to reveal important mechanistic insights into ultrafast dynamics and measurable spectroscopic properties.
