Established in 1850, the University of Rochester is a private non-sectarian research university based in the city of Rochester, New York.
It serves around 11,000 students of graduate and undergraduate level, split roughly half and half between men and women.
The university comprises 158 buildings and around 2,000 faculty members. It prides itself on its intimate teaching style and claims a student-teacher ratio of 10:1.
The university is spread across four campuses, the main one being River campus, situated just south of downtown Rochester by the Genesee River. Its centrepiece is the Eastman Quadrangle, which is home to the Faculty of Arts, Sciences and Engineering.
The other campuses are the medical centre, the Eastman school of music – home to the large Eastman Theatre concert hall, which also serves the Rochester philharmonic orchestra – and the South campus located in the town of Brighton.
In 1929 the Institute of Optics was founded at Rochester, becoming the first educational programme devoted specifically to optics in America. As well as this, the Omega Laser Facility houses two of the highest energy and intensity lasers in the world.
The university has a total budget of around $3 billion and an endowment of roughly $2.2 billion.
It has an alumni network of more than 100,000 and eight Nobel Prize winners.
Rochester’s official motto “Meliora” translates from the Latin as “ever better” or “always better.”
Its official flower has been the humble dandelion since 1853 when the growing university, requiring more space, was given eight acres of cow pastures as a donation. According to legend, the well-fertilised pasture resulted in a profusion of dandelions that led to the flower’s adoption as the school emblem.

Join Our Team – Research Fellow Opportunity at the Optoelectronics Research Centre We are seeking a Research Fellow with a strong background in optical glass science and fabrication to join the EPSRC-funded PURE collaboration between the University of Southampton and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). This role sits at the boundary between fundamental glass materials science and world-leading integrated photonics. The central goal is to fabricate and understand ultra-low-loss silica-based waveguides and ring resonators that push optical loss to the physical limits set by glass chemistry, deposition physics, and surface roughness. Your Responsibilities As part of the role, you will be required to operate and maintain state-of-the-art fabrication and characterisation equipment, liaise with our project partners at Caltech, develop innovative solutions, create new devices, publish results in leading journals, and investigate the potential to commercialise your outputs. Who We’re Looking For We seek a talented research fellow with skills and knowledge to complement our team. You should be comfortable working in a lab environment with furnaces, deposition systems, cleanroom tools and optical characterisation equipment. Experience with integrated photonics or resonators is useful, but a deep understanding of glass and materials behaviour is more important. We are looking for someone who enjoys building things, measuring them properly, and then figuring out why they behave the way they do. We are looking for a self-motivated researcher with good experimental skills who is willing to conduct research independently and collaboratively, and who values contributing to a supportive team environment. About the role The PDRA will conduct research within the Wellcome-funded Speculative Fertilities**: Finance, Pharma, and the Future of Reproduction** project, which aims to transform the social study of reproduction by analysing the intersection of the financial and fertility sectors as a key site of reproductive politics. Using qualitative methods, this project consists of three work streams analysing case studies that may transform the future of reproduction, including automated IVF, in vitro gametogenesis (IVG) and mifepristone (abortion pill) as contraception. The advertised position focuses on the latter work stream, which will explore the socio-cultural as well as political-economic dimensions of clinical trials that explore the possibility of using mifepristone as a weekly contraceptive. The research will focus on the social dynamics of both the clinical trials themselves and the steps towards registration, authorisation and implementation after the trial finishes. This is a full-time role, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 36 months. Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development.
