Study at VSB-TUO

VSB-TUO currently offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes for more than 12,000 students in engineering, IT, technology, economics, and business administration. Seven faculties provide a range of courses, including many English-taught options for exchange students. Practical training is central to the curriculum, with around 50% of coursework practice-oriented, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the global job market. Furthermore, the PhD Academy offers courses to help doctoral students develop key skills for their scientific careers.

The University follows the European Bologna Declaration and uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), facilitating student mobility and international degree recognition. VSB-TUO offers scholarships for international students in English-taught degree programmes and provides affordable, well-equipped dorms with internet in every room, cooking facilities, and a perfect location on campus.

Research Excellence

VSB-TUO is a national leader in High-Performance Computing and energy systems, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as 5G network to connect key infrastructure including our supercomputer centre, smart factory, e-health system, 3D printing, and a vast sensor network. This creates a dynamic Live Industry 4.0 Laboratory. The University's research mission focuses on fostering excellent science, research, and innovation, particularly in interdisciplinary R&D activities such as HPC, Industry 4.0, and Energy Research.

IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center (IT4Innovations)

IT4Innovations is a leading research, development, and innovation centre active in the fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Data Analysis (HPDA), Quantum Computing (QC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their application to other scientific fields, industry, and society. IT4Innovations operates the most powerful supercomputing systems in the Czech Republic. The key research areas include:

  • big data processing and analysis,
  • machine learning,
  • development of parallel scalable algorithms and algorithms for quantum computers and simulators,
  • solution of computationally demanding engineering problems,
  • advanced visualisation and virtual reality,
  • modelling for nanotechnologies,
  • and material design.

 

Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET)

CEET as an excellent research interdisciplinary institute at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, founded in 2021, brings under one roof four research centres : the ENET Centrethe Nanotechnology Centrethe Institute of Environmental Technology and the Energy Research Centre. The research agenda is focused on the Materials for Energy and Environmental Technologies, Energy Utilisation of Secondary Raw Materials and Alternative Energy Sources, Energy Storage, Transformation and Management and Environmental Aspects and Technologies. With a strength of over 250 scientists and researchers, CEET is committed to conducting from basic to applied research with excellent results and their implementation in practical use. Together we develop new materials and technologies for low-carbon and sustainable energy and environmental technologies in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. Our common strategy is energy transformation, a topic that cuts across all areas of our lives, from transport to industry and the environment. Like the rest of the world, we are searching for emission-free sources while at the same time looking for solutions that avoid generating additional waste and fill-up landfills.

Campus Life

VSB-TUO boasts the largest campus in the Czech Republic and one of the largest in Central Europe, situated in the pleasant surroundings of Ostrava-Poruba, near a forest with paths for inline skating and cycling. The campus features cafes, sports facilities (beach-volleyball and tennis courts, football pitches, etc.), a library, a student relax zone, an art gallery, a geological pavilion, and an observatory and planetarium. These facilities host various events open to the public, including exhibitions, fairs, film screenings, concerts, and educational activities. The campus is well-connected by public transport to other parts of Ostrava.

Life in Ostrava

Ostrava, Czechia’s third-largest city, is a vibrant university hub where students make up about 10% of the population. The city offers numerous cultural and entertainment options, with excellent public transport links within the city and to major European capitals.  Ostrava is also home to the Colours of Ostrava and Beats for Love music festivals, which host artists from around the world every summer.

Serving as a member of the senior administrative team, expectations withing these domains are as follows: Academic leadership Provide leadership in support of institutional philosophy, principles, and governance and for the deployment of strategic academic initiatives. In collaboration with the Institution senior administrative team, review quarterly teaching assessment reports and provide mentoring in support of faculty development and advancing contemporary teaching practices.  Counsel and guide the “Head of student trajectory and academic operations” to enhance student-centered teaching and learning approaches. Optimize alignment between programme descriptions, marketing materials, and actual delivery and enhance academic documentation to improve clarity and effectiveness. Work in close collaborations with the Administrative and Finance Director for academic budget framework (student recruitment targets; planning of programme offering and teaching assignments). Working in close collaboration with the Comité de direction, carry out data analysis and prepare detailed reports with actionable recommendations for optimizing programme delivery and revenue generating initiatives. Navigate effectively between senior academic administration, academic functions, and operational support ensuring transparent communication regarding project status, challenges, and solutions. Academic Quality Assurance Lead the implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance principles including transparency, equity, trackability, and accountability to ensure compliance with qualification standards. Monitor key performance indicators for academic excellence. Lead and oversee the academic cycle and Academic Council activities according to approved Terms of References. Required Qualifications Education & Experience Master's degree (PhD preferred) in the areas of “Gastronomy”, “Food Product Development”, “Food Sciences”, “Hospitality Management”, “Food & Beverage Management” or equivalent. Minimum 5+ years regular teaching responsibilities (including in higher education). Leadership & Management Skills Experience in academic affairs management/coordination experience in programme management, student affairs or academic operations management. Proven leadership ability with experience managing academic teams and working effectively with senior management. Track record of successful project management and delivery. Technical Skills & Competencies Experience with academic quality assurance processes including academic documentation, accreditation processes and compliance requirements. Experience in programme mapping, assessment design and data analysis across all levels of academic programmes and training. Proficiency in the use of educational technology and learning management systems and evolving best practices. Essential Personnal and Professional Attributes Language proficiency: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Minimum of Intermediate verbal proficiency in French language (professional working level). Willingness to relocate to Paris. France for full-time on-site presence. Rigorous Standards: Unwavering commitment to academic excellence and process adherence. Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? Can we exploit quantum photonics technology for novel quantum machine learning, quantum computing and quantum cybersecurity applications? Can we scale up multiphoton platforms by using integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources and customized two-dimensional nonlinear materials? Such questions are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments. Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant (PraeDoc) on this 4-year position, you will be part of the research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philip Walther. The group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics, and a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions.The main activities range from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. You will also benefit from being a fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), being part of a thriving community with more than 100 quantum scientists on the premises, about 300 quantum researchers in Vienna. The Walther Group unites an international team of scientists who are passionate about research in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum technologies. Our 35 researchers, from undergraduate student and PhD candidate to postdoc, are working together on mostly experimental topics in small subgroups. Teamwork is a key factor in our group’s success. Together we have assembled a unique skill set and knowledge base in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum foundations as well as the quantum-gravity interface. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You are involved in a specific and well-funded research project dedicated to experimental quantum optics in 2D materials. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will contribute to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) within the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You will fill some administrative tasks, contributing to the success and self-organization of the group for research, teaching and administration. You will continuously stay informed about the state of the art in your field. You contribute to outreach by publications, conference presentations and public activities. This is part of your personality: You have completed your Master's degree or Diploma in Physics and written your thesis in the field of quantum optics or nonlinear optics in ultra-thin materials. You have experience with table-top experiments, photonic platforms, optical non-linear processes, quantum optics and ultra-thin 2D materials. You have experience in academic writing. You should have experience with the usual tools for advanced experiments: programming experience: MATLAB, Python, LaTeX. You have excellent command of written and spoken English.
