The Times Higher Education World University Rankings have been highlighting the work of world-class universities since 2004. Our rankings are arguably the world’s most prestigious and widely referenced university league tables, covered and reproduced by media around the world. Featured institutions benefit from this global exposure with tens of millions of page views every year. The data we compile to produce these rankings are trusted by governments and universities and are a vital resource for students when they are making decisions about where to study.

Since 2015, we have expanded the range of rankings we produce to spotlight and measure the diverse missions of universities, including teaching and impact.

By submitting your data to any of our rankings, even if you do not meet the inclusion criteria, you will be entitled to a university profile on our website that will increase your visibility to our audience of academics, prospective students and their parents.

How to participate in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings:

The World University Rankings are our flagship ranking, bringing together five key elements of leading research-focused universities from around the world.

There are three key criteria that institutions must meet to be included in the ranking:

  • Publish a sufficient number of academic papers over a five-year period – this threshold is currently set at 1,000 papers
  • Teach undergraduates
  • Work across a range of subjects

You can submit data via THE’s secure data collection portal. See our brief guide for more information on our data collection process. And to get started, email profilerankings@timeshighereducation.com.

How to participate in Times Higher Education’s teaching rankings:

We produce three teaching rankings, covering the US, Japan and Europe.

Wall Street Journal / Times Higher Education US College Rankings

The WSJ/THE US College Rankings are open to US-based universities and colleges, and do not require active participation from targeted institutions. All institutions that meet the inclusion criteria are considered, and THE collects data for those; institutions do not have to submit any data themselves.

However, one criterion for being ranked is having a sufficient number of responses to the student survey. While THE does collect survey responses for some institutions, we are unable to do so for all, and unable to guarantee a sufficient number for all targeted institutions. If your institution has met the inclusion criteria, we will contact you regarding the survey and propose that you distribute it to your students; so please keep an eye on your inbox and do get involved if you can. This will help to ensure that we can rank you.

If you have any questions about the survey distribution or have not heard from us, you can contact us at usrankings@timeshighereducation.com.

Japan University Rankings

The Japan University Rankings are open to Japanese universities and require institutions to submit some data through our portal. If you meet our inclusion criteria, we will contact you and explain how to submit your data.

If you have any questions regarding the data submission process, you can contact us at japanrankings@timeshighereducation.com

Europe Teaching Rankings

The Europe Teaching Rankings require institutions to submit some data through our portal. If you meet our inclusion criteria, we will contact you and explain how to submit your data.

We will also need to collect a sufficient number of responses in the student survey, and strongly advise that institutions that wish to be ranked participate in the distribution, as THE will not be able to gather sufficient data for all.

If you have any questions regarding the data submission process or the survey distribution, you can contact us at europerankings@timeshighereducation.com.

How to participate in the Times Higher Education impact rankings:

The THE University Impact Rankings will launch in April 2019. Data collection is open to any university that teaches at an undergraduate level and is validated by a recognised accreditation body. We will also accept data from institutions outside this group for wider analysis and editorial purposes.
